The Peachtree Road Race is the most anticipated event of the summer in Atlanta, scheduled every July 4th. This year’s race was the 50th anniversary since the race’s conception in 1970. The race started at Lenox Road went along Peachtree and ended at 10th Street in Midtown’s Piedmont Park. Rhonex Kipruto, 19, of Kenya won the men’s elite race with an unofficial record-breaking time of 27:01, the Atlanta Track Club said. Not only that, he ran the fastest time ever on American soil. The women’s footrace event record goes down as Brigid Kosgei wins in a sprint to the finish in an unofficial time of 30:22. Daniel Romanchuk broke the men’s wheelchair race course record with an unofficial time of 18:11.
Sponsored by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the race has transformed from a humble 110-person endeavor to the largest 10K race in the world. Elite runners from around the globe make up some of the 60,000 spots in the race. We caught a few funny moments with runners showing off their patriotism; it's America’s birthday and all!
Two of our own ran the race, Dixon Raney and Doug DaSilva (pictured below)
