What is It?
A legal provision that reduces the amount of property taxes on owner-occupied homes. The amount of the homestead exemption is deducted from the assessed value. Once granted, the exemption automatically renews each year the home is occupied under the same ownership. You cannot file for this exemption on rental properties, vacant land, or anything other property other than your main residence.
How to Apply?
To apply for a homestead exemption, the home must be your legal residence for all purposes, including registration of vehicles. You must have a copy of the recorded deed and any supporting documents that are required, each county differs.
If you closed on your primary residence in 2020, the deadline to file is April 1st, 2021.
