Not all of the city of Atlanta is located Fulton County. About 10 percent of it is located next door in the mostly suburban, highly sought-after DeKalb County. In addition to Atlanta, well-loved local cities like Brookhaven, Avondale Estates, Chamblee, Decatur, Dunwoody, and Stone Mountain are all located here. As of 2010, the population was just under 700,000, and it continues to grow as more people discover everything the affluent county has to offer.
Things to Do
Many of Atlanta’s famed attractions are actually located inside DeKalb County. For example, Stone Mountain Park, is a great place to spend a day or a weekend with the family. You can hike the mountain, ride a riverboat, watch the Lasershow Spectacular, visit an Antebellum Plantation & Farmyard, play golf, and so much more. If you prefer something a little more educational, both the Fernbank Museum of Natural History and the Fernbank Science Center are popular destinations for children and adults alike. Located in Lithonia, the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area is considered one of the most beautiful national landmarks in the United States. The Michael C. Carlos Museum sits on the Emory University campus which is in DeKalb. The Callanwolde History Center, which once belonged to the Coca-Cola Company-founding Candler family, is also a popular destination. DeKalb is home to many of Atlanta’s premier malls, including North DeKalb, Northlake, Perimeter, The Gallery at South DeKalb, and The Mall at Stonecrest.
Because DeKalb County is so big and the neighborhoods are so unique, you won’t find just one type of housing here. Apartments, condos, townhomes, and single-family homes all have a place in the area, and the prices are just as varied. In Brookhaven, the average price for a home in 2013 was around $1.2 million, whereas the further away from the city you get, in places like Lithonia, you can find affordable homes for around $100,000.
Three different school systems serve the students of DeKalb County: Atlanta Public Schools, the Decatur City School District, and the DeKalb County School District. Some of Decatur’s city schools are thought to be some of the best in the state. Some popular private schools in and around Dekalb are the Paideia School, St. Pius X Catholic High School, and Marist School. Like Atlanta, DeKalb is home to several prestigious higher learning institutions and satellite campuses, including Emory University, Agnes Scott College, Mercer University’s Atlanta Campus, Oglethorpe University, Georgia Perimeter College, DeVry University, and Georgia Piedmont Technical College.
Life in DeKalb
Depending on where you choose to live, life in DeKalb County can be an urban stepping stone into Atlanta’s popular business districts or a suburban paradise. Many of its neighborhoods are considered to be some of the most family-friendly in the metro area. Many of its attractions are some of Georgia’s most famous destinations. What’s not to love?
