One of the questions we are asked most frequently is which Atlanta neighborhood inside the Perimeter is the best for families with children. For us, it’s less a question of one neighborhood being the best overall for families and more a question of which of Atlanta’s many family-friendly neighborhoods will fit your family and its needs best.
Here are a few of our favorite neighborhoods for families and the amenities they offer.
Garden Hills in Buckhead
The Buckhead district has several different neighborhoods, all of which have their benefits for families with children. We feel, however, that Garden Hills is the best of these for raising a family because it is a smaller neighborhood with lots of other families who take an active role in improving the community.
Garden Hills is close to Atlanta International School and Pace Academy, two of the city’s best private schools, as well as great public schools. Garden Hills is close to many hot Buckhead nightlife destinations and the Buckhead business district, and it offers easy access to the rest of the city.
Chastain Park in Atlanta
The Chastain Park neighborhood centers around one of Atlanta’s biggest and best parks. There are so many recreational activities to do that this neighborhood has become very popular with active families. It’s a highly walkable area with access to some of Georgia’s best public and private schools. Chastain Park also is close to exciting nightlife in Buckhead and the main business centers of Atlanta.
City of Decatur
If you ask anyone who lives in the city of Decatur what they think of their neighborhood, they’ll tell you the same thing each time: They love it! Decatur advertises itself as a mix between the big city and a small town, and residents find that to be the perfect mix.
There is a defined sense of community, and the city encourages this through many neighborhood events throughout the year. The schools of Decatur have consistently been ranked some of the top in the state, and parents don’t even need to leave the square to find amazing food and fun.
