Atlanta’s Perimeter neighborhood is actually located just north of the city between the upscale suburbs, Dunwoody and Sandy Springs. Named after Interstate 285 which forms a perimeter around Atlanta, the neighborhood encompasses part Georgia 400 and 285, making it easy for commuters to get into the city or other parts of the suburbs for work. Many people choose to work in the neighborhood, however, as it is home to some of Atlanta’s top hospitals, like St. Joseph’s, Northside, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, as well as its own busy business district that is considered to be one of the largest in Metro Atlanta.
Things to Do
Perimeter Mall is probably the area’s biggest attraction. With over 200 upscale stores and restaurants, including Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, and the Cheesecake Factory, the mall has been one of Atlanta’s top shopping destinations since it opened in 1971. Many excellent restaurants are also located within the borders of Perimeter Center, such as la Madeleine Country French Cafe, Joey D’s Oak Room, and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar. Murphey Candler Park is located just outside of the community in nearby Brookhaven. It features a fishing lake, hiking trails, picnic areas, tennis courts, a playground, pool, ball fields, and its own youth sports organization. For golfers, the Capital City Country Club is also just a few miles south in Brookhaven.
Perimeter is unique in that it sits in two different counties, Fulton and DeKalb, and three different cities, Dunwoody, Brookhaven, and Sandy Springs. It is largely commercial with many high-rise buildings and office parks, which means plenty of apartments, townhomes, and condos are located here. These include Park Towers, The Meadows, Riverview Forest, Glenridge Creek, and Fairfax. Some popular single-family neighborhoods near the Perimeter area include North Springs, Mount Vernon Plantation, Glen Meadow, and Spalding Woods. Sitting on what was once farmland until the 1960s, many homes in the community were constructed during the last few decades of the 20th century and reflect the styles of the era. The average single-family home usually costs between $400,000 $600,000.
Children who live in the Perimeter area will attend either Fulton County or DeKalb County public schools, depending on where they live. Several private schools are located just outside of the community, including The Weber School and Marist School.
Life in Perimeter
About 40,000 people live in the Perimeter neighborhood. While it is technically a suburb of Atlanta, its large business district provides a beautiful skyline and the look and feel of a major city. From doctor’s offices and hospitals to headquarters for major companies like UPS, AT&T Mobility, and Cox Enterprises, business is booming in this neighborhood. For this reason, many professionals are heading north to the area to find jobs and ditch their daily commute.
