Druid Hills and its 15,000 residents have the distinct pleasure of being part of the city of Atlanta, as well as unincorporated DeKalb County. For this reason, some call it the “perfect suburb,” a nickname that has been used since the late 19th century. Over the years, the historic neighborhood with its gorgeous residences, charming retail shops and restaurants, award-winning schools, and exciting cultural opportunities has attracted some of Atlanta’s most notable residents.
Things to Do
Because of its location between Midtown and Decatur, there are ample opportunities for dining, shopping, entertainment, and culture in Druid Hills. To the west sits Piedmont Park, a 189-acre park with a lake, sports courts, walking paths, picnic areas, a dog park, and much more. The lovely Atlanta Botanical Gardens are also just a couple of miles away. To the east, you’ll find the Fernbank Museum of Natural History and the fun, yet educational Fernbank Science Center. Located in the heart of the neighborhood is the upscale Druid Hills Golf Club, a private, secluded club that has been around since 1912. Dozens of mouth-watering restaurants are scattered throughout the neighborhood, too, including Bad Dog Taqueria, Saba, and Rise-N-Dine. If you prefer to cook your own meals, the world-famous DeKalb Farmers’ Market is located nearby, and features everything from fresh, local produce to international ingredients not usually found in the United States.
Druid Hills is home to hundreds of unique historic houses, ranging in style from Victorian to Georgian, that been restored or kept up throughout the years. In 2013, the average sales price was just under $600,000. Many of the residences sit on beautifully-landscaped lots that are just as serene as the small parks scattered throughout the neighborhood.
The prestigious Emory University sits within the borders of Druid Hills which is great for adults who want to continue their education or younger Druid Hills residents who don’t want to go too far from home to attend college. Most students in the neighborhood attend DeKalb County Public Schools such as Fernbank Elementary School, Druid Hills Middle School, and Druid Hills High School, which is an International Baccalaureate World School and was just renovated in 2009. Paideia School is one of the neighborhood’s top private schools.
